About Iron Workers Local Union No. 489

The Greater Scranton Area was built on the iron and steel industries and the Ironworkers Local Union No. 489 continues that tradition. First chartered in 1900, Local 489 encompasses 12 counties throughout eastern Pennsylvania – Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Wayne, Pike, Tioga, Bradford, Columbia, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Carbon and Sullivan Counties.

We are more than 460-members strong, and are proud to have a new union hall to call home. Dedicated in March 2005, our new hall is a central location for training, meetings, and office space.

We are a Local Union chapter of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers. We are also members of the Ironworkers District Council of Philadelphia and have taken a leadership role in various other organizations throughout northeast Pennsylvania.

You’ll find our work at the heart of a building’s structure. Our members erect the structural framework of buildings and also are essential in other projects, such as erecting bridges, blast furnaces, ornamental ironwork and dams. Our skill set includes welding, sheeting and rigging all of which are taught by certified instructors in our training facility.

Local 489 uses its special skill set to give back to the community, donating time and labor to projects at Nay Aug Park such as the tiger cage and the playground, and continuing to contribute to charities each year.
